Getting to Minca and the houses at 900 m

The short version: fly into Santa Marta (SMR), and you're about 35 kilometres from the door: paved road to Minca first, then an unpaved mountain track up to our ridge. That last stretch isn't an obstacle; it's where the trip starts to feel different. It ends nine hundred metres above the Caribbean, among banana and coffee. The whole route from the airport can be arranged with a single message. Prices, options and honest expectations below.

Step 1: flying into Santa Marta (SMR)

Santa Marta's Simón Bolívar airport is served by frequent domestic flights, most commonly connecting through Bogotá (BOG) or Medellín (MDE), both well-connected internationally from North America and Europe. The domestic leg takes a little over an hour.

Two tips from the hosts: if you connect through Bogotá, leave yourself a generous layover. Immigration can be slow, and you'll usually collect and re-check your bag when entering Colombia. And if you can, land in daylight: the drive up is perfectly doable after dark, but the views are part of the arrival.

Step 2: from the airport: straight to the house, or via Minca

From the airport you have two sensible options:

Direct transfer to the house. Our driver meets you at arrivals and takes you all the way to the door, including the mountain stretch, which needs the right vehicle. You pay in cash, on the spot, to the driver. After a long flight, this is the option we recommend.
Transfer to Minca, then the climb. If you'd like to stop in the town first (the market, a coffee, supplies), ride to Minca and do the mountain stretch separately, by 4x4 or local moto-taxi.

Either way, one WhatsApp message with your flight number is enough. We arrange the rest.

Step 3: the last stretch: Minca → the house

Minca sits about half an hour below the houses. The final kilometres are an unpaved mountain track. We say that plainly, because we'd rather you know what to expect: it takes a proper 4x4, or the moto-taxis locals ride up and down every day. In the rainy season the track gets muddy; the drivers know every bend, but a time buffer helps.

It's also where the journey changes character. The asphalt ends and the forest begins: coffee and banana right at the roadside, the air cooling as you climb, and through the gaps in the canopy, more and more of the sea. At nine hundred metres you step out into a different climate from the one you landed in.

Practical tips

Send your flight number ahead. The driver tracks the arrival, so a delayed plane doesn't break the plan.
Withdraw Colombian pesos in advance for transfers and small purchases in Minca.
Soft bags beat hard suitcases on the mountain stretch, if you have the choice.
Evenings are cool at 900 m. Pack a light sweater. The climate up here is gentler than on the coast.
Travelling with a pet? Pets are welcome at Misterio. Just let us know in your message.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive up in a rental car?

To Minca, yes. Up the mountain track to the houses, only with a genuine 4x4 and gravel-road experience. Most guests take our transfer or a moto-taxi, and that's what we recommend.

How long does the trip from the airport take?

It depends on Santa Marta traffic and the weather on the mountain stretch. As a guide: well under an hour to Minca, then about half an hour from Minca to the houses. The drivers know the road. There's no need to rush it.

Is a moto-taxi safe?

Moto-taxis are how Minca's residents get up and down this road every day. The riders know every bend. With bigger luggage or in the rainy season a 4x4 is more comfortable; with a backpack, a moto-taxi is quick and entirely normal here.

I land late in the evening. Is that a problem?

No. Tell us in your message, we'll brief the driver and have the house ready for your arrival. The night drive takes about the same. You just save the views for the morning.
